WHAT TO READ

Many, many books have been published concerning the Holocaust. Those listed below are particularly recommended because they are very powerful personal accounts of bearing witness and/or raise complex moral and spiritual issues. The ones marked by asterisks are accounts of events that took place at Auschwitz itself. Please read at least one of these books in preparation for the retreat:

Amery, Jean. At the Mind's Limits: Contemplations by a Survivor on Auschwitz and its Realities. Schocken (New York: 1986).

Borowski, Tadeusz. This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen. Penguin Books (New York: 1976)

Wiesenthal, Simon. The Sunflower. Schocken Books (New York: 1997).

Wilkomirski, Binjamin. Fragments. Schocken Books (New York: '1997). Please note that this book is probably fiction and the author is involved in legal proceedings.

WHAT TO BRING

During the retreat everyone is invited to read the names of people who lost their lives at Auschwitz. If you have your own list of names of people who died in the Holocaust, there will be an opportunity to remember them by reading their names aloud. If you know people who had family and friends suffer and die in the Holocaust, a touching offering is to ask them for the names of their loved ones and offer to remember them by reading their names aloud, offering a prayer for them. If you know people have been killed as a result of other genocide's throughout the world, there will be an opportunity for you to remember and read these names as well. Please write these names down and bring them with you.

The hostel in Oswiecim is heated and provides linens, blankets and a towel for each participant. Please bring personal hygiene items.

Meals served at the hostel are vegetarian. Please keep in mind that during the days we will remain outdoors on the grounds of Birkenau rain or shine. It will be cold and damp. It may very likely rain or snow. Please be sure to bring as many clothing layers as you need to remain outdoors all day including a warm coat and boots (water-proofed), wool sox, hat, scarf and gloves. Please bring a waterproof poncho for wet or snowy weather. Thermal underwear (insulated underware or long-johns) are highly recommended, as we are outdoors in all weather.

Cushions and benches will be provided for mediation. Plastic covering for the cold ground will also be provided.
